This series of
images were taken in a Asylum Centre in Roskilde, Denmark. Within the Danish
system, asylum seekers have to stay in centres until their case has been processed,
which can take years. This particular centre is a reception centre, newly arrive
asylum seekers come here. The centre is divided up so conflicting nationalities
are kept apart. Everybody is given an identical bed, cupboard and fridge.
The only signifier which
distinguishes from one another is the unique number tag given to them by
the centre.
Kari is interested in the way personal objects signify cultural identity. Photographs of personal objects are documented within the institutional space and hand written stories and memories by the asylum seekers themselves encounter the audience in an attempt to explore the narratives of places left and found, of cultures brought and found. |
